NIGHTINGALES OF ESSEX (CHELMSFORD)

Martin Pugh will talk about the 2025 Essex Nightingale survey, including methodology, key stakeholders, recording, and analysis. This survey was borne of the planning threats to Middlewick Ranges and covered South Colchester, including Fingringhoe Wick, Abberton and Friday Woods. A separate related survey was also conducted at Danbury. The survey team was made up of a collection of local birders and surveyors, including many members of the EBwS. The BTO provided support and verification/validation of the process and data. The outcomes have provided a fascinating insight and update of the nightingale population in these areas of the county, reiterating the significance of these habitats as nationally important breeding grounds.
