Bradwell Bird Observatory (BBO) 10:00 to 16:00,
291 Red-throated Diver (South on incoming tide. Quite a spectacle, with 120+ going past in a two minute spell. The movement stopped at 15:00 just prior to high tide. Of interest, and which might explain the large number - at the the time there were hundreds of gulls out in mid estuary and a lot of coming and going of Cormorants too, probably involving many hundreds of birds.) 800 Golden Plover 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker (Female Obs garden.) 2 Peregrine Falcon (1 adult male and 1 adult female (probably the power station pair) together on Gunners shellbank, in front of the Obs. The female was plucking and eating prey (adult Black-headed Gull) with the male standing close by. After the female had finished eating she left the pickings for the male. They then loafed about on the shell bank for some time, both with very full crops (especially the female). The female left 40 minutes later, the male left after 1 and a quarter hours leaving the rest for the waiting crows.) 40 Linnet (Obs salt marsh. Just to let you know the Twite flock hasn't been seen since the high tides of a few of weeks ago which completely covered the salt marsh. Also, I was informed by one of the contractors carrying out bird surveys for the power station that the Dartford Warbler had been seen again a few days ago south of the Obs near Lure. ) [John Sutherby]
