Established in 1949, the Essex Birdwatching Society has a growing membership of over 500 like-minded individuals with a passion for the natural world around us and a particular an interest in birds. We cover the whole of 'ancient' Essex, which includes the metropolitan area and our primary aims are:-

To support bird conservation and protection throughout the County.

To promote the monitoring and recording of our wild bird population.

To encourage anyone with an interest, from beginners to more experienced birders.

To provide a platform for members to share sightings, experiences and photographs.

To help members improve and develop their identification skills.
What we do
In our role as the County bird society, we offer a number of interesting ways for people to get involved with birdwatching in Essex.
We hold monthly meetings from September to April in Chelmsford, giving members a chance to discuss their recent birding activities and renew acquaintances. Guest speakers attend these meetings, presenting illustrated talks on a varied and fascinating range of subjects.
We run a full programme of guided field trips covering sites both in Essex and further afield. For the longer trips luxury coach travel is provided and there is always a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on board.
Our social media presence includes Facebook and Twitter. We also present a monthly livestream on our YouTube channel where we discuss recent sightings and events. Members can interact by posting comments and questions, contributing information to the discussion and participating in fun competitions.
An undoubted highlight is our biennial conservation conference which takes place at Writtle University College, where attendees can enjoy a full day of lectures and presentations from local and national experts. Lunch provides an opportunity to browse the varied stands for merchandise or perhaps to book a bird trip abroad and the conference ends with a grand raffle where lots of excellent bird related prizes can be won.
